Accidents with injuries and fatalities on roadways are rising all over the world and are attributed to\u00a0be\u00a0caused by drivers who are distracted.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Defining Distracted Driving<\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">The definition of distracted driving from Dictionary.com is <strong>&#8220;the practice of driving a motor vehicle while engaged in another activity, typically one that involved the use of a mobile phone\u00a0of\u00a0other electronic device.&#8221;<\/strong> This can include everything from talking or texting on your phone, eating, drinking, fiddling around with your radio or navigational system, putting on makeup, reaching to pick something up and even reading a book! <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Law enforcement has seen it all and cannot stress enough how important it is for drivers to fully pay attention while traveling on the road.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">The saying that &#8216;I only took my eyes off the road for just a moment&#8217; takes on a new connotation when you look at the latest reports from AAA and\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhtsa.gov\/risky-driving\/distracted-driving\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">NHTSA<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span data-contrast=\"none\">Three Sobering Distracted Driving Facts and Statistics:<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"1\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><strong>25 &#8211; 50% of all accidents are caused by distracted driving &#8211; AAA\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"1\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"2\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><strong>In 2016 3,450 people were killed by distracted driving &#8211; NHTSA\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"1\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"3\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><strong>Sending or reading a text takes your eyes off the road for at least 5 seconds. If you are driving at 55 mph that would be like driving the entire length of a football field with your eyes closed! &#8211; NHSTA\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>What is Being Done to Help Stop Distracted Driving?<\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Distracted Driving laws have already been put on the books in some states in the U.S. and are continuing to be put into place in others to help assist officers better with enforcing distracted driving. In Georgia starting July 1st, drivers are not allowed to physically touch their phone while driving. A person can send a text hands-free, using a phone&#8217;s voice-to-text feature, but drivers are not allowed to reply. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">The new law also includes things such as drivers\u00a0are not\u00a0allowed to watch or record videos\u00a0and\u00a0do anything with their music apps while driving. This law is called the Hands-Free Georgia Act and law enforcement is not going to joke around about enforcing it.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Garrett Townsend, director of public affairs for AAA in Georgia is hoping this will reduce the number of accidents on the state&#8217;s highways. Townsend states: <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>&#8220;The 15 states that have passed hands-free driving laws saw a 16 percent decrease in traffic fatalities in the two years after the law was passed,\u201d the agency said. \u201cIn addition, traffic fatalities were reduced even further in subsequent years.&#8221;\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Laser Technology has long been an advocate for making our highways safe and invented the first laser speed device in 1991.
